BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht nodigt u van harte uit voor het symposium Propositions #10: Instituting Otherwise, op zaterdag 7 december 2019, van 13.00–21.00 uur. Het symposium stelt als centrale vraag: hoe kunnen kunstinstellingen zich verhouden tot urgente sociaal-maatschappelijke kwesties die vandaag de dag spelen?
Met het oog op deze kwesties – zoals klimaatmisdaden, aanhoudend racisme, systemische ongelijkheid en vormen van fascisme – stelt dit symposium de kunstinstelling voor als een soort microkosmos; een wereld in het klein die zowel maatschappelijk als ecologisch rechtvaardig is. De praktijk van de kunstinstelling zelf kan daarbij gezien worden als de verwezenlijking van de 'not-yet': een collectieve, alternatieve verbeelding van 'een andere wereld' en 'een andere toekomst'.
Tijdens het symposium reflecteert een grote verscheidenheid aan sprekers op de uitdagingen die gepaard gaan met het (her)inrichten en vormgeven van een kunstinstelling volgens bovenstaande principes. Ook worden een aantal relevante begrippen en ideeën besproken, zoals de notie van 'civic practice', collectieve vormen van leren en radicale pedagogie, solidariteit en onderlinge zorg, en de illusie dat instellingen politiek en ideologisch gezien neutraal zijn.

Propositions #10: Instituting Otherwise wordt georganiseerd in het kadervan het programma Trainings for the Not-Yet (14 september 2019–12 januari 2020), en is het tiende deel in BAK's langlopende onderzoeksreeks Propositions for Non-Fascist Living(2017–doorlopend). Het symposiumwordt voorafgegaan door een reeks workshops op vrijdag 6 december 2019, specifiek voor collega-kunstinstellingen, fondsen en beleidsmakers in Nederland.

Propositions #10: Instituting Otherwise

BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht is pleased to invite you to Propositions #10: Instituting Otherwise, a one-day public symposium on the civic practice of art institutions, on Saturday 7 December 2019, from 13.00–21.00 hrs. The symposium probes the question of how to institute spaces for art in the face of the pressing urgencies of the present.
Driven by these urgencies—such as environmental violence, persistent racism, systemic inequalities, as well as fascisms and micro-fascisms—the symposium engages a proposition of the art institution as a microcosm of a world centered on social and ecological justice. In this proposition, the practices of the art institution are the actualization of the collective alternative imaginings of the "not-yet": of "another world" and "another future."
The symposium discusses challenges related to such a repurposing of the art institution, and considers notions of civic practice, collaborative learning and radical pedagogy, solidarity and mutual care, as well as the fallacy of institutional politico-ideological neutrality.

Propositions #10 Instituting Otherwise is convened as a temporary spin-off from Trainings for the Not-Yet (14 September 2019–12 January 2020)and is the tenth iteration of BAK's long-term research series Propositions for Non-Fascist Living(2017–ongoing), which seeks to collectively think and act out ways of being together otherwise. The symposium is preceded by a series of workshops for fellow art institutions, funds, and policy makers in the Netherlands, held at BAK on 6 December 2019.
