Met trots verwelkomde BAK afgelopen week de nieuwe post-academische BAK 2019/2020 Fellows, tien uitmuntende makers en denkers op het gebied van kunst, theorie en sociale actie uit binnen- en buitenland. De Fellows zijn geselecteerd uit ruim 200 aanmeldingen. Ze krijgen het komende jaar de mogelijkheid om aan hun eigen onderzoekstraject te werken en deel te nemen aan collectief leren en uitwisseling.
De BAK 2019/2020 Fellows zijn: schrijver, educator en performer Mijke van der Drift (Amsterdam en Londen); antropoloog en curator Mitchell Esajas (Amsterdam); curator en criticus Katia Krupennikova (Amsterdam); onafhankelijk mediaproducent Diana McCarty (Berlijn); kunstenaar, architect en onderzoeker David Muñoz Alcántara (Helsinki); filmmaker en schrijver Oleksiy Radynski (Kiev); onderzoeker, curator, redacteur en kunstenaar Reem Shilleh (Brussel en Ramallah); beeldend kunstenaar Urok Shirhan (Rotterdam en Londen); performance-, installatie- en bewegingskunstenaar en educator Joy Mariama Smith (Den Haag); en curator Grant Watson (Londen).
De BAK Fellows doen onder meer onderzoek naar de context, politiek en achtergrond van hedendaagse migratie; ecologie, de klimaatcrisis en de betwiste relatie tussen natuur en cultuur; de mogelijkheden en gevaren van technologie in de strijd voor rechtvaardigheid en transformatieve politiek; en het op nieuwe manieren nadenken over, en vormgeven van, instituten. Ze verhouden zich hierbij tot BAK's langlopende onderzoekstraject Propositions for Non-Fascist Living (2017—nu), dat zich richt op esthetisch-politiek experiment om urgente hedendaagse kwesties onder de aandacht te brengen. In het Fellowship-programma staan de ontwikkeling van talent en kritische praktijken, alsmede de stimulering van artistiek en theoretisch onderzoek voorop. Het is bovendien nauw verbonden aan BAK's publieke programma.
De Fellows verblijven niet bij BAK, maar komen wel regelmatig samen bij BAK voor zogenaamde 'Fellows Intensives', een weekprogramma waarin kunstenaars, wetenschappers en andere culturele beoefenaars te gast zijn, en waarin publieke activiteiten worden georganiseerd, zoals excursies of samenwerkingen met andere organisaties in binnen- en buitenland. Dankzij onze samenwerking met de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU) en de Universiteit Utrecht, komen de Fellows in contact met studenten en met andere culturele professionals en hun desbetreffende vakgebieden. Dit geeft hen de mogelijkheid om hun eigen onderzoekspraktijk uit te diepen en te verbreden.
Het post-academische BAK Fellowship-programma, dat BAK organiseert sinds 2017, richt zich op het herdefiniëren en opnieuw nadenken over de hedendaagse stand van zaken door middel van gepolitiseerde kunstproductie- en onderzoek. Het Fellowship-programma duurt tien maanden en biedt tien onderzoeksplaatsen per jaar (september–juni) aan Nederlandse en internationale beoefenaars op het snijvlak van kunst, theorie en sociale actie. De BAK Fellows worden middels een open sollicitatieprocedure door een selectiecommissie verkozen. Eén plek wordt gereserveerd voor een uitzonderlijke kandidaat die anders niet deel zou kunnen nemen aan het programma en die uitgenodigd wordt om zich aan te melden. Zie ook de BAK Fellowship pagina.
BAK's hoofdpartner op het gebied van onderwijs en onderzoek is Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. BAK wordt meerjarig gesteund door financiële bijdragen van het Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap en Gemeente Utrecht.

Last week BAK proudly welcomed the new post-academic BAK 2019/2020 Fellows: ten outstanding practitioners in the arts, theory, and social action from the Netherlands and abroad. The Fellows have been selected from approximately 200 applicants. The BAK 2019/2020 Fellows have the opportunity to work on their own research trajectories as well as engage in collaborative learning and exchange in the coming year.
The BAK 2019/2020 Fellows include: writer, educator, and performer Mijke van der Drift (Amsterdam and London); anthropologist and curator Mitchell Esajas (Amsterdam); curator and critic Katia Krupennikova (Amsterdam); independent media producer Diana McCarty (Berlin); artist, architect, and researcher David Muñoz Alcántara (Helsinki); filmmaker and writer Oleksiy Radynski (Kyiv); researcher, curator, editor, and artist Reem Shilleh (Brussels and Ramallah); visual artist Urok Shirhan (Rotterdam and London); performance, installation, and movement artist and educator Joy Mariama Smith (The Hague); and curator Grant Watson (London).
BAK Fellow research trajectories speak to conditions, politics, and genealogies of contemporary global migration; ecologies, ecological crisis, and naturecultures; the potentials and dangers of technology in struggles for justice and transformative politics; and thinking and enacting institutions differently. They also have specific affinity to BAK's current trajectory Propositions for Non-Fascist Living (2017–ongoing), which engages aesthetico-political experimentation to address the urgencies of the present. The Fellowship Program develops talent and critical practice, and fosters artistic and theoretical inquiry in concert with the public projects of BAK, advancing the notion of art as a public sphere and a political space.
BAK Fellowships are low-residential. BAK Fellows regularly gather at BAK for Fellows Intensives with visiting artists, scholars, and other cultural practitioners, as well as public programming, visits, and collaborations with various organizations in the Netherlands and beyond. Thanks to collaborations with HKU University of the Arts and Utrecht University, both in Utrecht, in particular, the Fellows broaden their research practices through exchanges with students and other cultural practitioners in their respective fields.
Since 2017, BAK conducts a post-academic Fellowship Program with, at its center, research on reframing and rethinking conditions of the contemporary through politically driven art-making and inquiry. The ten-month Fellowship Program offers ten research positions per year (September–June) to Netherlands- and internationally-based practitioners at the intersection of art, theory, and social action. BAK Fellows are chosen via an open application process by a selection committee, with one position reserved for an outstanding practitioner otherwise unable to participate who is invited to apply.
